City Center
Workforce Development
Ready4Work was
developed in 2002 by the Department of Labor’s Center for Faith Based
Initiatives as the pilot site of the Ready4Work initiative. Jacksonville
Ready4Work brings together a collaboration of existing programs that together
create a web of services for returnees. Two faith-based organizations have thus
far combined efforts to provide leadership for this program: Operation New Hope
and City Center Workforce Development. Operation New Hope was formed in January
1999 to provide affordable housing in the historic Springfield District of
downtown Jacksonville and the surrounding urban core, and today provides job
training and job placement in the construction field for returnees. City Center
Workforce Development recruits participants into the program from prison
facilities, partners with other organizations to recruit mentors from the faith
community and supplies case management to participants and mentors. HERE
for more information.

Operation New Hope
In the summer of 2002, The Labor
Department's "Center for Faith Based and Community Initiatives"
started a small reentry pilot program in Jacksonville, Florida. Called the
"Ready4Work Initiative," it incorporated mentoring and job training at
Operation New Hope, a community development corporation that since 1999 had been
doing its own grassroots work with returnees. Its executive director, Kevin Gay,
together with local pastor Garland Scott, who is himself an ex-prisoner,
discovered that if they were able to give an ex-prisoner a recommendation based
on a few months as an employee at Operation New Hope, that individual would have
a much better chance of finding another, more permanent job. HERE

Ready4Work
Ready4Work was
developed in 2002 by the Department of Labor’s Center for Faith Based
Initiatives as the pilot site of the Ready4Work initiative.
HERE
